A Slice of Bread

Matt. 6: 34 Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things...

I once read about a group of children who were being kept in a special home at the end of World War II. They had suffered terribly during the war; all of them being separated from their parents and were now either orphans, lost or abandoned. Their caregivers were very concerned however, because even though they were now safe and well cared for, the children cried a lot, especially at nights. This problem continued until one wise person came up with an idea. Each evening after supper, before they were put to bed, each child was given a piece of bread to hold. Confident that they would have something to eat tomorrow, the children slept peacefully through the night.

Many people are anxious each day, not knowing what tomorrow will bring and if they will be able to meet their basic needs. All around the world there are people who live in poverty and, even in the richest countries, there are persons who daily face hunger and a lack of proper shelter and security. As “donkey seh ‘de worl no level’”, many have more than they need while others have almost nothing. This was true in Jesus’ days as well. Jesus had to remind the Jews that God their Father was their Provider. He said to them, and to us today, “Do not worry about tomorrow. Things will be taken care of at that time. Just trust in God and He will take care of you”.

So what about you? Do you find yourself worrying about the future? Are you afraid that you may not have the money for food, or transportation or school fees? Are you afraid that that relationship that you are in will fail and leave you all alone again, or that that abusive person will catch up with you again? Are you afraid that the cancer will return or that you will lose the scholarship? Whether it is food, shelter, protection or healing, let God take care of your needs today and take this slice of bread to bed with you tonight, that God is in control. Your tomorrow is secure in His hands.

Dear Lord, thank you that I do not have to be afraid for tomorrow, but that I can be confident that you will take care of all tomorrow’s needs, in Jesus’ name, amen.
