When Jesus Came Calling

Luke 19: 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

As far back as he could remember that is what he wanted: MONEY! To be rich. He wasn’t tall, dark and handsome. His only really good subject in school was Math. Not talented or good at sports, he didn’t stand out in any way; but now, wow! The large white mansion, the really cool ride, the designer clothes, he was somebody! They couldn’t ignore him now even if they wanted to. He had the government fully behind him. Yet, sometimes he felt empty. He wasn’t happy. He wished they really liked him, that he had a genuine friend; that life had some greater meaning and deeper satisfaction.

Although Jesus was such big news, he hadn’t gotten excited about Him like the others had. He was too busy making money. Now suddenly he began to feel the excitement that seemed to grip everybody in Jericho because Jesus was coming to town. He had always noticed how those who spent time with Jesus seemed to be happier and at peace. Could Jesus give him some happiness, some peace? If he could just get a glimpse of Him…

Remembering how as boys they would climb the trees to get a glimpse of Caesar, Herod and other dignitaries who came to town, he quickly climbed up into the old sycamore tree. Nobody would notice him here. As the crowds passed below the tree, he finally caught sight of Jesus. He saw the happy people around Him and he wished he could be included in this fellowship. He almost fell from the tree when Jesus stopped, looked directly up at him and called him by his name. There was a moment of silence while everyone stared at him and then the mocking laughter started from the crowd as they looked - down their noses - up at him.

But Jesus felt the pain of his lonely heart. He knew that Zaccheus needed a change which only he could give. He was not ashamed to identify with this unpopular rascal, even going home to eat with him. Others wondered why Jesus should choose to be in such awful company, but He had come to save the lost, to give worth to the worthless and joy to the heavy-hearted. He still does that today and wants to do it for you and me. Will you let him into your life?

Dear Lord, I need the joy, peace and hope that You bring to all. Come in and give me a new life I pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.
