Jump!
Ps. 18: 2 The Lord is my Rock...My God, in whom I will trust
The crowd had gathered quickly. A fire always seems to draw a crowd. It had broken out on the ground floor and now, even though the fire fighters were doing their best, it seemed that the whole four-storey building would be lost. Suddenly somebody shouted, “Look! A little boy!” And sure enough, there was a small boy staring with frightened eyes at the excitement below. It was clear that nobody could enter that building from the ground floor and neither could the child walk that way to come out. It was before the days of modern engines with long ladders. There seemed only one way to save him. Somebody quickly brought a large piece of canvas. Strong men held it around the edges and then they shouted “Jump, little boy, jump!”
The child stood at the window. He knew the fire was there. It was coming his way, but that was a long distance to jump. No. There must be another way. He was not going to jump. He was just too afraid. The crowd became frantic. They shouted at him trying to coax him to jump, but he wouldn’t budge. Suddenly there was a movement in the crowd. A man came pushing through, saying, “Excuse me, excuse me”. In a moment he was standing by the men with the canvas. Squeezing in and taking hold of one corner he looked up and shouted, “Jimmy! Jump”. The little boy climbed out on the window sill, took one look down and jumped. As he landed on the canvas below, he rolled over, grabbed on to the man and said, “Daddy!”
There is nothing that inspires confidence like knowing you can trust the ones you have to depend on. Life is full of trying situations and sometimes we are afraid to step out, to make those difficult decisions, to let go the things we are familiar with, to take a new step. For those who know the Lord and have related to Him as Father and Friend, it is that much easier to take those giant leaps because we know who holds the canvas. Remember how much He loves you and know it is in His power to keep you, then climb out on that window sill – and jump!
Dear Lord, You have proven many times how much You love me. I trust You now as I make critical decisions in my life. Guide me I pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.
