Rainbow in Your Sky

Gen. 9: 13 I set My rainbow in the cloud and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth

You would have had to be there to understand the shock. When they went into the ark, they left behind an almost perfect world with majestic trees, fantastically beautiful flowers of every imaginable colour and green grass stretching as far as the eyes could see. The fruits were large and lush and all the days were bright and sunny because nobody had ever seen a rainy day. Beautiful animals and birds were all around and everybody seemed to be in the best of health.

Now as Noah and his family stood at the open door of the ark, they felt shock, fear and confusion. The earth was brown and barren, with pools of dirty water, thick mud and decaying bodies. Once beautiful mountains now showed, jagged rocks where the top soil had been washed away. The stench of death and decay was everywhere. Even the animals in the ark were silent as depression seemed to be suffocating everyone.

Oh my God! What is this? Where is everybody? Dead! What has happened to our beautiful world? All we can see is death and destruction. What future is there for us? Will anything grow again? Will there be trees and flowers? Will we see little children, share music laughter or friendship? Yes, the world was evil, but now everybody is dead. What about us? Will we be wiped out one day too? Will there be another flood? Will life ever be normal again?

Then God spoke to the desperate little group as they clung hopelessly to each other. “I will not send another flood to destroy the earth. Until the end of time there will be crops and seasons and growing and blooming things. You have seen my anger and my justice. Do not forget my love and my mercy”. And then God did a wonderful thing. He sent a rainbow; a glorious splash of beautiful colours in a dark, ugly and dismal world. “When you see this rainbow”, God said, “remember My promise. All will be well”.

Whenever you are depressed; when the world seems dark and hopeless; when you are overcome with fear, look up. God has put a rainbow in your sky. Trust His promises. All will be well.

Lord, in the dark and threatening problems of life help me to see the rainbow of hope as I trust your promises, in Jesus’ name, amen.
