Perjury

Acts 1: 8 But you shall receive power…and you shall be witnesses to Me

When they announce in church, “Today we are going out witnessing”, you can be sure there are some persons who won’t turn up. What do you think of when you hear the word witnessing? Going from door to door trying to get people to let you in and listen to what you have to say? Being rebuffed and insulted by those who do not want to hear? People asking you questions you can’t answer? Or are you just afraid people might ask, “How come you are coming to tell me about God when you are doing so and so?”

Witnessing is something that Christians do. All of us as human beings were going to die. Jesus loved us so much that He came and died for us, and if we believe in Him we will have eternal life instead. This is good news that so many people do not know. They ignore Jesus and are still heading for death. They need to know Jesus and believe in Him. If we have the love of Jesus in us we will not want them to die. We will want them to know the Jesus who is loving, kind and forgiving. We will want to share the news that will save them from death.

It is good to witness. But even more importantly, it is good to be a witness. To witness, you may have to learn how to do visits, to give Bible studies or to pray with others. It may take time for you learn how, or to overcome your shyness. However, to be a witness you simply need to ask God’s Spirit to guide you that you may be like Jesus in the way you live every day. People will hear what you say, but they will believe it more if they see it in your actions. Actions do speak louder than words. Every Christian is a witness.

In a court of law, a witness is one who tells of what he has seen, heard or experienced personally. If he never saw or heard, if he does not really know but he pretends, they say he has committed perjury (been a false witness) and he can go to prison for it. Are you a true witness? Does the way you live really tell others about Christ? Can they know Him better because they know you? Or are you committing spiritual perjury?

Today, let others see the good things of Jesus in your life and they will come to know Him because they see Him in you. Be a true witness.

Lord, help me today to be a true witness so that others will see Jesus in me, in Jesus’ name, amen.
