Need a Drink?

John 14: 4 But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst…

When you read this passage you will recognize it is from the story of the woman at the well. I am sure that most persons living in our country have had the experience of being really in need of water. One week in particular, there were severe water problems in Mandeville where I lived. Persons had to put off washing their clothes and used limited water to bathe, cook and clean. There were times when it was difficult even to find water to drink.

My roommate and I had gone to the school campus to fetch water to bathe, drink and do our cooking. We would have to make several trips. After our second trip, a pastor who lived next door to us stopped us and asked us where we were heading. We told him we needed water and that we were getting it from the school. He told us that he had enough water in his tank to share with our household of twelve persons and invited us to get water from his tank. How thoughtful of that kind pastor, we thought.

You know, that reminds me of the invitation our Saviour is giving us. In John 7: 37 He says, “If any man thirst let him come to Me and drink”. Sometimes we think of going far places, away from home, away from our surroundings and our community to refresh our thirsty souls. But just like that pastor who was sitting on his veranda, seeing us passing with our empty jugs, Jesus is right at the very door of our hearts, waiting to fill our thirsty souls. He knows our souls are empty like those empty jars and He has enough for everyone; not just our household but everyone!

Jesus, just like that kind pastor, is saying, “You don’t have to walk that far; you don’t have to go anywhere”. In fact, Jesus will walk and meet you right where you are. Why don’t you allow Him to fill your thirsty soul today?

Dear Lord, help us to accept your invitation. Come into our hearts and fill our thirsty souls today, in Jesus’ name, amen.
